While the 2018 and 2022 editions of the Golden Globe Race engaged and inspired audiences globally, the 2026 edition will see that step up with the unprecedented, all-new GGR Live Window system. Built in conjunction with pioneering Swedish technology company TriPeak, it will draw the curtain on seven skippers’ circumnavigations and welcome audiences around the world into the fold.
The use of Starlink in the 2025 Mini Globe Race showed the value of video reports from the skippers, allowing audiences to witness the highs and lows of a circumnavigation, as Don McIntyre, founder and race director, explained.
“Our experience in the McIntyre Mini Globe Race, where all but one entrant was using Starlink and computers, made us think.”
However, the restrictions on technology which make the GGR so unique also meant creating the Live Window had plenty of challenges. Clearly, the systems used in the MGR could not simply be ctrl-c and ctrl-v-ed onto the GGR, and required a specialist solution, costing in the ballpark of €300,000 - a gargantuan outlay for the GGR which continues to lack a headline sponsor.
The GGR Live Window System runs off Starlink.
There are three cameras mounted across the boat. This particular camera films action in the cockpit.
The 'black box' was designed to be as simple as possible. Note buttons for 'call', 'live', & 'stop'. The system draws around four amps.
Despite the eye-watering cost though, the Live Window system will provide even greater value to the GGR; the 2022 edition had an independently assessed Advertising Value Equivalent of €165 million and the race organisers hope the new system will build on this.
“It costs a lot, but the reason we invest in adventure, even without major partners, is to inspire people. This will shoot the numbers through the roof for mums and dads and sailors alike, inspiring many more than we ever have in the past. It's truly exciting.”
The Live Window system displays details such as skipper heart rate, yacht pitch, apparent wind speed and direction, and speed and course. It will allow those following the race an inside view into the races of seven skippers: Ertan Beskardes of Miss Beagle, Gunnar Christensen of Pompoen, Damien Guillou of Solarem, Etienne Messikommer of Bernard, Louis Kerdelhué of IE Charge, Helga Marie “Mara” Løvenskiold Kveseth of Showgirl, Pär Nyman of Lazy Otter, and Andrea Lodolo of Bibi

It will even show an inside view into the GGR race office on occasion, bringing behind-the-curtain experiences to the masses of people following the GGR.
The Live Window system will also be used in 2027 on the McIntyre Ocean Globe Race (OGR), a similarly retro race in spirit of the 1973 Whitbread.
